Five Soft Tissue Injuries That Result From Accidents or Overuse

Damage to soft tissues is one of the most common types of accidental injuries. Occurring as the result of car accidents, slip and fall accidents, or on the job due to overwork and strain, they can cause ongoing pain and limited mobility, eventually resulting in permanent disabilities. At SAM LAW OFFICE, LLC, we provide the legal guidance you need in seeking compensation for the medical costs, lost wages, and other expenses you incur as a result of your injuries. The following outlines five common types of soft tissue injuries and the potential treatments they may require.

Soft Tissue Injuries and Treatments

Soft tissue injuries generally impact the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that run throughout the body. According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), they can occur as the result of sudden trauma, or due to overuse and putting repetitive stress on a particular body part. Common types of soft injuries include:

Sprains

Sprains involve stretching of the ligaments, which are connective tissues between bones which help to support and stabilize the joints, such as in the knees, ankles, and wrists. While a mild sprain may involve using ice, anti-inflammatory medicines, and getting plenty of rest, more severe cases may require a brace or even surgery to repair damage.

Strains

Similar to sprains, these involve stretching of the muscles or tendons, which are fibrous cords connecting muscles to bones throughout the body. These injuries often occur in the back, legs, and feet, causing pain and limited movement. Again, getting adequate rest is essential to recovery and physical therapy may be required to rebuild strength.

Tendonitis

This involves inflammation of the tendons, often in the areas near joints, such as the elbows, shoulders, knees, and hips. According to John Hopkins Medicine, they are a common type of overuse injury which often develop into chronic conditions, requiring the use of steroid injections and medications.

Bursitis

The bursa are fluid-filled sacs which help to cushion bones and joints. Due to overuse or sudden injuries, they can become inflamed or even infected. Treatment involves rest, elevation, and compression of the injury site. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

Tears

Muscle, tendon, or ligament tears are among the most severe types of soft tissue injuries. Often occurring as the result of car crashes, slips and falls, or on-the-job accidents, they require surgery to repair the damage and can result in long-term disabilities.
