When couples in Illinois divorce, issues surrounding child support may take center stage. During these times, cooperation can be the key to a successful outcome.
Rapper and producer Timbaland and his wife of five years are divorcing, and the wife has asked for child support payments, along with other means of financial support. In addition to child support payments, Timberland’s ex-wife is asking for financial support from Timbaland for private schooling, alimony, summer camp, vacations and for legal fees. His ex-wife not only asks for support for the couple’s five-year-old daughter, but also for her child from a previous relationship, whom the ex-wife feels is owed support because Timbaland allegedly treated the child as his own both in private and in public.
The amount of child support payments owed to the receiving parent may be determined by the courts. Courts will look to the best interests of the child in order to determine an appropriate level of child support. In making this determination, courts will typically consider factors such as the income and education levels of the spouses, as well as their potential for any increases in income. The court will order whatever level of child support it deems necessary to properly provide for the child’s everyday expenses and other aspects of the child’s well-being.
However, spouses in a divorce matter also have the option of making their own agreements concerning the level of child support payments. Communication with the other spouse may be difficult, but this option helps avoid any acrimonious battles over the subject during the divorce process. The spouses also have the right to make modifications to the child support agreements should the need arise. Both spouses have the legal option to make the divorce less painful and difficult than it otherwise would be.
