Protecting Yourself Against Weather Related Car Accidents

Winter weather can hit hard in Arlington Heights and throughout Illinois, and it is important for drivers to be prepared. On side roads as well as on highways, conditions such as freezing rain and snow can lead to an increase in car accidents and injuries, particularly when dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence, or distracted driving are involved. Being aware of the potential dangers and taking a few simple preventative measures can help to ensure that both you and your passengers remain safe.

Car Accident Risks in Winter Weather

Winter weather can make driving a challenge for even the most experienced drivers, increasing your odds of being involved in an accident. Of the nearly six million car crashes that occur each year in the U.S., the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates that adverse weather conditions are a contributing factor in roughly 20 percent. Wet pavement, freezing rain, and snowy conditions can all result in the following:

  • Decreased road and traffic visibility;
  • Increased likely for skidding due to poor tire traction;
  • Reduced maneuverability in stopping and making turns;
  • Greater potential for vehicle maintenance issues.

Protecting Yourself Against Winter Driving Hazards

You can help prevent breakdowns and reduce your risks of being involved in an accident by making sure your car is well maintained during the winter. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends checking vehicle fluid levels regularly, carrying extra windshield washer fluid, cleaning off head, tail, and brake lights before you go, and making sure your tires are in good condition and are properly inflated. Other winter driving tips to increase your safety include:

  • Avoid driving when under the weather or overly fatigued;
  • Avoid distractions such as making calls or texting, and keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel;
  • Go slow, and allow yourself plenty of time to get where you are going;
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on potentially slick surfaces;
  • Always look and steer in the direction you want to go;
  • Brake early in traffic and when approaching red lights;
  • Wear your seatbelt at all times.

If you do break down, pull off to the side of the road as much as possible, and wait for help to arrive.
