When is it Time to Get a Divorce?

Considering a divorce? You are certainly not alone. The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that approximately 75,000 married couples get divorced in the state each year.  That being said, the actual decision to get a divorce is an incredibly difficult one. You may not even be sure if it is the right decision. Here, our Illinois divorce attorney highlights some of the key signs that suggest it may be time to consider a marital separation.

  • Loss of Intimacy

Intimacy is not just about the physical. If you and your spouse no longer share personal thoughts, emotions, dreams, or simply the events of the day, it could be a sign that the emotional connection has weakened. Indeed, loss of (or reduced) intimacy is one warning sign it is time for a divorce.

  • Problems With Communication

Communication is one of the keys to any successful marriage. In many cases, it is the breakdown in communication that is one of the very earliest warning signs that something is going wrong with a relationship. Of course, poor communication does not always mean a divorce. In many cases, couples can work things out. Still, it is one warning sign of problems.

  • Lack of Effort from One or Both Spouses

Effort matters. It should not be underrated. Marriage requires effort from both parties. If one or both partners have stopped trying, whether it’s in maintaining communication, intimacy, or shared responsibilities, it is an indication that the commitment to the marriage might be waning.

  • Marital Infidelity

While some couples can work through an affair with therapy and open communication, infidelity or a refusal to address the underlying issue can be a clear sign that the marriage is in trouble.

  • Substance Abuse or Addiction

Whether it is alcohol, drugs, or any other addiction, if one partner refuses to acknowledge their problem or seek help, it can drive an insurmountable wedge between both partners.

  • Abuse

Any form of abuse, whether physical, emotional, or psychological, is a clear sign that the relationship is toxic. No one should tolerate abusive behavior, and seeking safety should be a priority.
