Some celebrities can be good role models for divorce done right

There is little debate about the fact that America is obsessed with celebrities. As such, the personal lives of celebrities are often closely scrutinized and widely reported on. This includes things like divorce and child custody battles.

Generally speaking, celebrities are not good role models when it comes to family law disputes. Their high-asset divorces tend to also be high-profile and high-conflict. That being said, there are certain celebrities who handle divorce with admirable grace and class. One such celebrity is comedian Amy Poehler.

The actress, best known for her work on “Saturday Night Live” and “Parks and Recreation,” announced in 2012 that she was separating from her husband Will Arnett. The couple has divorced since then, but Poehler has remained relatively silent about the details.

However, in her soon-to-be-released memoir, Amy Poehler discusses the divorce in very relatable ways. The 43-year-old actress says: “Imagine spreading everything you care about on a blanket and then tossing the whole thing up in the air. The process of divorce is about loading that blanket, throwing it up, watching it all spin, and worrying what stuff will break when it lands.”

On a more positive note, Poehler is complimentary of her ex-husband and notes that she is proud of how they are working together to co-parent their two young sons. She adds: “I am beyond grateful he is their father, and I don’t think a 10-year marriage constitutes failure.”

Not every divorce can end so amicably, and not all former spouses can remain friends. But the way Amy Poehler discusses her divorce and the successful co-parenting relationship she has built is a good reminder that these outcomes are often possible. It is also a reminder that for couples with children, the relationship doesn’t really end after the divorce is finalized. Therefore, it’s a good idea to make peace when you can.
