Illinois State Police reported that a collision involving three vehicles occurred around 5:10 p.m. on Nov. 4 on Route 142. One of the drivers did not survive the collision, and another driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to the ISP, the deceased driver, a 69-year-old man who was driving a pickup truck, was struck while driving south. The driver who struck him, a 23-year-old man who was driving a sedan, had drifted into the path of oncoming traffic while heading north.
Immediately following the collision, the sedan continued northbound and into the path of a 22-year-old woman who was driving a compact car. The woman did not report any injuries.
Car accidents in which two or more vehicles collide can lead to legal complications as well as injuries, as it may be difficult to establish the liability of a single driver. Police investigators may conduct investigations in cases like this in an attempt to understand how the accident occurred.
Establishing liability in a car accident is important if the accident leads to legal action. For example, a driver who was injured in an accident may desire financial compensation to help pay for their medical costs. If evidence is presented that shows the injured driver was struck due to another driver’s negligence, compensation may be ordered by the court. This kind of evidence may consist of crash reconstructions from the police, eyewitness testimony, reports from a medical expert and whether or not the liable driver was impaired in any way.
